Technology & AI

The platform behind our websites

We run and maintain our own technology. Shared services sit behind most of our websites, and AI helps us work faster, with a person checking everything before it is published.

One shared platform

Instead of a separate back end for every website, our content and comparison sites draw on shared services. A fix or an improvement made once reaches all of them.

  1. 01 · Sources

Retailer and partner data feeds bring in offers, prices, specifications and product images

  2. 02 · Content platform

One headless CMS stores content for our content and comparison sites, each in its own space

  3. 03 · Websites

Each website is built and deployed on its own, so a change to one can't take down another

  4. 04 · Readers

Our Next.js sites render pages on the server, so they load quickly and are easy for search engines to read

Headless content platform

A single CMS holds articles, products, offers and pages for our content and comparison sites, and delivers them to each one through an API.

Data and enrichment

Automated jobs collect offers, prices and product details from retailer and partner feeds, then organise them into the catalogue.

Product search

A shared search service indexes the products in our catalogue so they can be found quickly.

Platforms by website

Different websites need different tools. Content and comparison sites run on Next.js with a headless CMS; our online stores run on hosted store platforms or WooCommerce.

How we build

Engineering habits we apply across our websites.

Independent deployments

Each website builds and releases on its own, so an update to one site never interrupts another.

Server-rendered pages

Our Next.js sites send pages ready to read, which keeps them fast on phones and clear for search engines.

Built-in fallbacks

If the content platform is briefly unavailable, our CMS-backed sites fall back to stored content instead of showing an error.

Secure by default

Every site is served over HTTPS, and secrets stay out of our code repositories.

We believe in AI, built with regulation

AI is changing how information is found, written and published. We think it will make useful websites better: faster to update, more complete and easier to use.

We also think that only works if AI is developed and used within clear rules. People should be able to trust what they read, know who is responsible for it, and have their privacy respected. We welcome regulation that makes that the norm, in Australia and in the markets our readers come from, and we will follow it as it develops.

How we use AI today

We use AI to draft and enrich content, such as product titles and descriptions, so our catalogue stays complete and consistent.
